    The Effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom on Homework and Student Achievement in a Secondary Mathematics Classroom

    The purpose of this action research study was to determine the effects, if any, a flipped classroom had on homework and student achievement. The study took place in a high school mathematics classroom over a four-week timeline. Two sections of Algebra 2 were included in this study. Data sources collected from the students included the use of a pre-assessment, quiz, homework rubric, surveys, behavioral logs, and a final assessment that covered the mathematics concepts of rational exponents and radical functions. Additional qualitative data was also collected through teacher observations and teacher-student conversations. While 44% of studentsā€™ overall grades improved, the final test average was only 67%. Results were inconclusive as to whether using a flipped classroom pedagogy improved student achievement; however, students copying each otherā€™s work to receive homework completion points was eliminated during implementation of this pedagogy for the fact that the homework was completed during class time

    Future systems will be too complex to design and implement explicitly. Instead, we will have to learn to engineer complex behaviours indirectly: through the discovery and application of local rules of behaviour, applied to simple process components, from which desired behaviours predictably emerge through dynamic interactions between massive numbers of instances. This paper describes a process-oriented architecture for fine-grained concurrent systems that enables experiments with such indirect engineering. Examples are presented showing the differing complex behaviours that can arise from minor (non-linear) adjustments to low-level parameters, the difficulties in suppressing the emergence of unwanted (bad) behaviour, the unexpected relationships between apparently unrelated physical phenomena (shown up by their separate emergence from the same primordial process swamp) and the ability to explore and engineer completely new physics (such as force fields) by their emergence from low-level process interactions whose mechanisms can only be imagined, but not built, at the current time

    'Sounds of Intent' : Mapping musical behaviour and development in children and young people with complex needs

    This article reports on the first year of an Esmae Fairbairn Foundation-funded research project into the design and evaluation of an original 'framework' for mapping the behaviour and development in, and through, music for children with complex needs, specifically those with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). An initial four-month design and pilot phase critiqued and evaluated a framework that was grounded in video-based iterative analyses of individual case studies that had been collected during the previous two years. The piloting phase was followed by a sustained period of classroom-based music lesson observation in five special schools over a period of seven months. A total of 630 observations were made using the framework for 68 participants whose ages ranged from 4 years 7 months to 19 years 1 month. Subsequent analyses support the general design features of the observational framework and provide new evidence of PMLD musical behaviour and development

    Are Accounting Metrics Applicable to Human Resources? The Case of Return on Valuing Assignments

    The importance of accounting for human resources has long been recognised by the Accounting profession. Until recently, Human Resource Accounting (HRA) literature has been dominated by discussion as to whether humans fit the traditional definition of assets, and how to measure and report them. We investigate the concept of human capital and its measurement through a review of the HRA literature, as well as the literature in Human Resources (HR). This paper then draws on the findings of a small exploratory study into the measurement of Return on Investment (ROI) for international assignments. Interview data reveals that intangible costs and benefits are problematic when applying such a metric; that much of the outcome from the assignment is intellectual capital, in its broad sense, and therefore difficult to isolate and effectively measure

    Designing a Free Academic Early Alert System

    This manuscript describes the development and implementation of a cloud-based, academic early alert system using Google Sheets. It was written for a non-computer savvy person to be able to develop the early alert system. By creating a Master Sheet and using the syntax from the share function of Google Sheets, a unique sheet can be created for each advisor that limits information sharing of their specific advisees. By adding a Google Form to the sheet, advisor interventions can be captured that reflect interventions made as a result of the early alert sheet. Approximately 52% of students were identified on the early alert sheet by having at least one non-passing score on an exam. There were 35-50% of faculty advisors who documented their interventions in the sheet. The template and coding used to develop this academic early alert sheet may be applied to other central documentation needs, such as professionalism early alert.     Characterization and reduction of line-to-line crosstalk on printed circuit boards

    Master of ScienceDepartment of Electrical and Computer EngineeringWilliam B. KuhnAn important concern for high speed circuit designs is that of crosstalk and electromagnetic interference. In PCB board-level designs, crosstalk at microwave frequencies may result from imperfections in shielding of PCB interconnects or more generally transmission lines. Several studies have been done to characterize and improve the isolation between PCB transmission lines for both digital and RF circuits. For example, previous studies in the microwave region have examined the effect that line type, line length, and separation have on crosstalk and suggest that without full shielding, the upper limit of isolation is on the order of 60dB for traditional board-level lines [1]. In order to more fully characterize crosstalk and improve isolation above 60 dB, this thesis studies signal-to-ground-plane separation, considers advanced line types, and examines the effect of 3D shielding. Results are presented from 100MHz to 30GHz for the traditional transmission line structures of microstrip, CPW, differential pair and CPW differential pair. This study shows that with a halving of distance between signal and ground planes, isolation between transmission lines can be reduced by as much as 20dB, making this one of the best ways to improve performance. Advanced methods of shielding are then presented. Direct launch stripline and single-sided CPW improve upon existing crosstalk reduction techniques, while split shielding and ablation of dielectric PCB material are also proposed. The data and additional crosstalk reduction techniques discussed in this thesis serve two purposes. One: with a more complete understanding of the effects that transmission line types and parameters have on crosstalk, engineers can quickly identify potential crosstalk issues and resolve them before manufacturing. Second, this thesis presents the engineer with four new additional techniques that may become available in advanced manufacturing environments. Such techniques can further reduce crosstalk and may allow for isolation values to approach 100 dB at the PC board level
